I may still post more random personal stuff here but things that I feel worthy of being shared with the outside world are now going to dfan.org/blog. | | Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 | | 4:36 pm |

Things you love and can't stand anymore
I recently realized that there are a fair number of things that I think are totally awesome but never really want to see or hear again, largely through overexposure I guess. That is, any reference to them is more likely to make me roll my eyes and think "Not that again," rather than think "Oh yeah, I love that," even though I do.
My off-the-top-of-my-head list is
- Monty Python
- Gilbert & Sullivan
- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Hmm, all humorous, probably not a coincidence.
Things that I would expect to be on this list but aren't (YET):
- Spinal Tap
- Lord of the Rings

Honest Bob playing at the Kirkland Cafe Thursday April 19
Our show will be nice and early (at 9pm), nice and cheap ($5), and nice and convenient (a short walk from the Harvard Square T). We will endeavor to make the performance itself as nice as possible. The Kirkland Cafe is at 425 Washington St in Somerville, right next to Dali. | | Sunday, April 1st, 2007 | | 3:23 pm |

I have been tagged
to answer questions about books. Hey, I can do that. One book that changed your life: I'll say Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, by Abelson and Sussman. since it helped me decide to major in computer science. One book you have read more than once: I've read Gravity's Rainbow, by Thomas Pynchon, four or five times now. The Cyberiad, by Stanislaw Lem, is up there too. One book you would want on a desert island: The collected scores of the Bartok string quartets. I have this in one volume so it's okay! One book that made you laugh: The Code of the Woosters, by P.G. Wodehouse. One book that made you cry: A Very Long Engagement, by Sebastien Japrisot, before the movie came out. More recently I think I teared up at The Dream of Scipio, by Iain Pears. One book you wish had been written: A treatise on musical composition by Alban Berg. A second volune of annotated chess games by Bent Larsen. One book you wish had never been written: The Fermata, by Nicholson Baker. I loved his earlier books and then this was just embarrassing. One book you are currently reading: Against the Day, by Thomas Pynchon. Also The Bloody Crown of Conan, by Robert E. Howard. One book you have been meaning to read: Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides. Now I am supposed to tag other people but I don't like doing that, so just put up your own if you feel like it. | | Saturday, February 10th, 2007 | | 11:34 pm |
Be careful what you wish for
Liza and I were just watching an episode of The Wire on the DVD player. At around 56 minutes, just before the episode was going to end, the screen suddenly went black and the DVD player stopped. Shit, we missed the ending of the episode, which was probably some great cliffhanger! The display just said HOT. We tried ejecting and reinserting, no luck. Power cycling, nope. It just refused to play anything. Well, we said, maybe it thinks it overheated, and we should just try again in a bit. 15 minutes later, it does start up, and after a few frustrating minutes of accidentally fast-forwarding too far or too little, we finally get to see the end of the episode that we had been missing. Which consists of 30 seconds of a guy throwing up followed by the credits rolling. |
